Omar Cruz is a Latino recording artist from Los Angeles, California who began his journey in the mid to late 2000s. He is one of the most talented rappers to have graced the microphone. His popularity in the underground mixtape circuit resulted in a major-label recording contract with Interscope/Geffen in 2006. The son of a Mexican mother and Colombian father, Cruz was born in L.A. and grew up in the South Central region close to Crenshaw. Omar was initially inspired by the music of Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and most of all N.W.A. Subsequently, he found Latino rappers namely Big Punisher and Cypress Hill influential along with Los Angeles rappers like 2Pac, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.
Gradually drawn into the hip-hop scene, Cruz initially adopted the name Blunts LLA (Latin Lyrical Assassin). As Blunts LLA, he introduced two underground mixtapes namely 2004’s City of Gods and Blow in 2005. After his name change to Omar Cruz, he further increased his popularity with the release of Cruzifixion in 2006 and 2007 B.C. in 2007. Cruz has collaborated with artists like The Game, Pitbull, WC, Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock, Ya Boy, Joell Ortiz, Paul Wall, Baby Bash, Sick Jacken, Skeme and many more.
In 2006, Cruz signed a record deal with Interscope/Geffen Records and began work on his major label debut album titled, Sign of the Cruz. The first single I Hang With My Dogz produced by Javie Lopez was met with a positive response and followed up with To The Top ft. Frankie J. In 2008 Omar signed on to be the host of Pimpeando on MTV Tr3s, a Latino version of Pimp My Ride. By 2009, on the heels of an anticipated album release, label politics and mismanagement began disrupting plans for the Sign of the Cruz. He released one more mixtape in 2010 titled The Hand of God and by 2011 was officially released from his contract.
After taking a two-year hiatus from the music industry, in 2012 he then partnered with Los Angeles engineer/producer Kev Da Khemist and formed the independent music label known as Los Angeles Based (LAB) Records. The first major release from this indie label is The Book of Omar street/mixtape album. It is actually the introduction to the long awaited debut album from Omar Cruz, The Passion Of Cruz.
On October 10th, 2014 Omar & ESPN LA's Mario Ruiz from the Max & Marcellus radio show released "Mexican Style" on Youtube, a song and video inspired by professional boxer Gennady Golovkin. The song was viewed over 60,000 times in 48 hours with the greatest response coming from GGG supporters in Kazakhstan, the boxer's home country. The song has been played on the Max & Marcellus Show on 710AM ESPN LA.

“L-A-B” Omar Cruz ft. G-Eyez
Los Angeles-based Latino rapper Omar Cruz made noise with a series of mixtapes as Blunts LLA, before signing to Interscope/Geffen in 2007, where singles “I Hang with My Dogz” and “To The Top” garnered critical praise. And then, as is so typical, label politics undermined his fame. Now associated with producer/engineer Kev Da Khemist, Cruz has co-founded indie label LAB Records (Los Angeles Based Records), and in November 2013, released the mixtape/street album “The Book Of Omar,” featuring Glasses Malone, Crooked I, Compton Menace, Aztek Escobar, K-Young, Annimeanz and WE55. The second single produced by label CEO Kev Da Khemist, “L-A-B” featuring LAB Records artist G-Eyez, offers a greasy, grimy, mid tempo beat with lyrics about finding a groove, making a name for yourself and climbing each wrung of the ladder toward success—as G-Eyez proclaims that “…I’m just out here doin’ me/ So while you sittin’ on the couch, I’m in the L-A-B/." His flow is keen and rapid-fire, the message decisively savvy—and the potential boundless. Stay tuned for Omar Cruz's full-length album “The Passion Of Cruz” in 2014.

Can you appreciate the bars here?
This is something we definitely feel at BB77. Not only because we have the greatest ear to the street but because we take the time to listen to what the artists produce and tell you about it.
So I press play and immediately the head nodds. The beats a monster with the perfect mix of guitar, reverb organ, hard drums, bass line and occasional angelic female on the hook. The spit game is perfect for the beat. Both artists come hard delivering the expected flow. Ok "Cruzito voice of the young people..."
We hope to hear more from you soon!
This mixtape is nice! Omar Cruz definitely has bars and he sounds dope on these beats. The production on the tape is on point, and I’m especially digging that Skyfall cover. There are also a few really dope collabs on The Book Of Omar, and that We On track with Compton and Crooked I is nice. This will definitely help build the buzz for The Passion Of Cruz, and the biblical theme is definitely a cool marketing strategy. You can cop a physical copy of The Book Of Omar on Omar’s official website www.losangelesbasedrecords.com.
Keep an eye out for more from Omar Cruz, and be sure to check him out on Twitter to stay up with the latest.
It seems like its been a minute since we have heard anything from Omar Cruz, but he returns today with a dope new video for his track “We On”. The track finds Mr. Cruz linking up with Crooked I and Compton Menace for some unadulterated hip hop for our listening pleasures. The video for “We On” finds the fellas draped in a midnight blue backdrop surrounded by abandoned vehicles as they spit their incredibly dope bars. As the clip progresses the fellas show us the gritty side of the west coast before wrapping things up.
